EDOW FALL CLERGY GATHERING

The diocese's Fall Clergy Gathering is set for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the 

National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase. Keynote speaker is Jon Meacham, editor of Newsweek, a Pulitzer Prize winning bestselling author and a commentator on politics, history and religious faith in America. Meacham will discuss his book "American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation" and the role of church and state in America today. Meacham's book can be found on Amazon.com or local bookstores if you would like to read it prior to the gathering. Register at www.edow.org/events "Clergy Gathering." Cost is $15, to cover lunch. If they have changed from those last on file (some parishes haven't filed in several years), you will need to send new paperwork as soon as possible so the database can be corrected before the fall Regional Assemblies (which begin Oct. 17 for Regions 1-4). NEW LATINO MINISTRY AT ST. ALBAN'S, D.C

A new Latino ministry will be launched at St. Alban's, D.C., with  a 5 p.m. Oct. 4 service where the Rt. Rev. Julio Holguin, bishop of the Episcopal Church of the Dominican Republic, will preside. Following this event, a Spanish-language service, with music, will be held at 5 p.m. each Sunday at the church. All those interested in participating are invited to attend. * The ALL YOUTH CATHEDRAL LOCK-IN is set for Nov 13. 

The theme is "Episco...what? EpiscoLOVE!" Participants will learn about the Bible's perspective on love and Jesus' commandment to love God, ourselves and one another. Register online by Oct. 30 at www.edow.org/youth After registering online, registration packets are due to Church House by Nov. 4. Parishes are limited to 15 youth and 3 adults. Register early as places fill quickly. Leftover spaces will be distributed by lottery.

SAFEGUARDING GOD' S CHILDREN

FIVE AUTUMN EVENINGS OF PRAYER

There are the seasons of the earth and the seasons of our lives. There are deep connections between the two - connections that we might not be aware of. For five autumn evenings, you are invited to gather at Epiphany, D.C., to pray contemplatively with the images and words of autumn, to become more aware of God's presence in the season and our response to God. COMMUNITY FORUM SERIES AT ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S, LAYTONSVILLE

A free monthly Community Forum Series kicks off at St. Bartholomew's, Laytonsville at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 with a presentation and discussion titled "Pakistan: Where Next?" led by Frank Dall, an expert on political and social issues in Europe and the Middle East. Dall will offer a brief historic overview and lead a discussion on the current situation in Pakistan. Upcoming topics in this series include "Youth: What are the issues facing youth? What are the options for parents?" on Oct. 6, and "Caring for our aging parents: What are our issues and options?" on Nov. 3  All forums will begin at 7 p.m.

RUSSIAN ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM AT CHRIST, DURHAM

LYRA, a vocal ensemble from St. Petersburg, Russia, will perform at Christ, Durham at 7 p.m. Oct. 2. All singers are professional musicians, singing in different churches of St. Petersburg.  Through their performance, they introduce the enormous musical heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian folk music. The church is located at 8685 Ironsides Road

CONCERT SERIES OPENS WITH JAZZ PERCUSSIONIST AT GRACE

The Music of Grace concert series opens this season with The Alexander Cooper Project, "A Soulful Celebration of the Worshipful Spirit in the Music of Jazz." This contemporary jazz ensemble, led by world class percussionist Leon Alexander, plays in a range of genres and redefines the approach to rhythm in music. The performance, set for 4 p.m. Sept. 20 (Sunday) at Grace, Silver Spring (1607 Grace Church Road Silver Spring, Maryland 20910) is free and open to the public. CELTIC EVENING PRAYER AT ST DAVID'S, D.C.

St. David's, D.C. will offer a service of Evening Worship with a Celtic flavor at 5 p.m. Sept. 20 (Sunday)  to celebrate our Celtic Christian links and heritage. The service, "Reflections on the day's Ending," will follow a simple, traditional format of readings, music, prayer and contemplation. All are welcome. SOUL PILGRIMAGE TOUR

The Episcopal Church Women & Girls of Calvary is sponsoring a Soul Pilgrimage Tour on Sept. 26 to visit some of the oldest historically black Episcopal churches in Washington, D.C. The bus tour will begin at 9 a.m. and includes visits to St. Mary's, St. Luke's, Calvary and St. George's churches. The Rev. J. Carleton Hayden, historian (and assistant rector at St. George's) will guide the tour, with on-site presentations made by members of the participating churches. ADVENT SILENT RETREAT

The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat on Dec. 4- 6 at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville. Retreat director will be the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean of the Virginia Theological Seminary. The theme will be "Faith, Forgiveness and Peace: Bringing Human Complexity to God." The retreat will include prayer, private reflection and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There will be opportunities for consultation or confession with Markham. The fee is $195. DATE CHANGE! PILGRIMAGE TO SOUTH AFRICA

All Hallows Guild at Washington National Cathedral will conduct a Bird Walk on Sept. 24 at 8:30 a.m. Participants will meet at the George Washington Statue on Pilgrim Road, on the south side of the Cathedral. Bring binoculars and catch the spring migration with experienced birder Sheila Cochran. Free; no reservations are required. Program will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. EPISCOPAL CHURCH MUSICIAN TO LEAD WORKSHOP

HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED

The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan. 10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families; Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED

The Pitts Emergency Grant was recently created by the Saint Anna's Home of the Diocese of Washington. The one-time grant of up to $1,500 is designed to offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Episcopal Church House, Mt.
