FALL CATHEDRAL CONFIRMATIONS

ESM TEA TO THANK PARISH CONTACTS

DOING CHURCH DIFFERENTLY
The Rev. Andrea Martin, associate rector at St. Patrick's, D.C., invites interested clergy and lay leaders to take part in a colleague group that would continue the conversation begun by Phyllis Tickle at the May Clergy Conference. The group will begin by attending the Sept. 27 event, "Experiencing Emergence," at Epiphany, D.C., and dining together afterwards. Depending upon interest, future topics for exploration could include: extending church beyond the walls of a building; finding alternative models of leadership and/or liturgy. The group might read a book together such as Brian McLaren's "Generous Orthodoxy" or one of the other books included in Tickle's annotated bibliography. SOUL PILGRIMAGE TOUR
The Episcopal Church Women & Girls of Calvary is sponsoring a Soul Pilgrimage Tour on Sept. 26 to visit some of the oldest historically black Episcopal churches in Washington, D.C. The bus tour will begin at 9 a.m. and includes visits to St. Mary's, St. Luke's, Calvary and St. George's churches. The Rev. J. Carleton Hayden, historian (and assistant rector at St. George's) will guide the tour, with on-site presentations made by members of the participating churches. Adults/$39; children (teens & under)/$20 (includes continental breakfast and lunch). Proceeds support the Community Outreach Program for Girls. LOSS AND GRIEF: UNDERSTANDING FEELINGS, HELPING OTHERS
Clinical social workers Cay Hartley, LICSW, and Elizabeth Dietel, LICSW - both experienced in grief work - will lead this informative session from 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 at St. Alban's, D.C. ADVENT SILENT RETREAT
The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat on Dec. 4- 6 at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville. Retreat director will be the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean of the Virginia Theological Seminary. The theme will be "Faith, Forgiveness and Peace: Bringing Human Complexity to God." The retreat will include prayer, private reflection and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There will be opportunities for consultation or confession with Markham. The fee is $195. DATE CHANGE! PILGRIMAGE TO SOUTH AFRICA

ALL HALLOWS GUILD BIRD WALKS
All Hallows Guild at Washington National Cathedral will conduct Bird Walks on Sept. 17 and 24 at 8:30 a.m. Participants will meet at the George Washington Statue on Pilgrim Road, which is on the south side of the Cathedral. Visitor parking is available in the cathedral garage accessible off Wisconsin Avenue. Bring binoculars and catch the spring migration with experienced birder Sheila Cochran. EPISCOPAL CHURCH MUSICIAN TO LEAD WORKSHOP

ACOLYTE FESTIVAL
The 30th annual Acolyte Festival is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at Washington National Cathedral and acolytes at parishes around the diocese are invited to take part. The event, which draws acolytes from around the nation, will include worship and workshops. Acolytes are invited to bring processional crosses, banners, torches, thuribles, flags and streamers for a festive procession. Liturgical dance groups are also welcome. 54TH ANNUAL POTOMAC COUNTRY HOUSE TOUR
The 54th Annual Potomac Country House Tour, organized by the Women of St. Francis, Potomac to benefit local, regional and worldwide charities, is set for Oct. 3 and 4. HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED
The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan. 10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families; Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. There are spaces available for up to seven additional adults or older youth. Costs will be about $1,000 including language study and airfare. Act quickly to make low cost air reservations. NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED
The Pitts Emergency Grant was recently created by the Saint Anna's Home of the Diocese of Washington. The one-time grant of up to $1,500 is designed to offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Episcopal Church House, Mt.
