SOUL PILGRIMAGE TOUR

The Episcopal Church Women & Girls of Calvary Church is sponsoring the "Soul Pilgrimage Tour" to visit some of the oldest historically Black Episcopal churches in Washington, DC. on Saturday, September 26th. The daylong bus tour begins at 9:00 am and includes visits to St. Mary's, St. Luke's, Calvary, and St. George's churches.  Historian, Reverend Dr. J. Carleton Hayden (St. George's) will serve as guide with on-site presentations made by members of the participating churches.  Tickets: Adults - $39; Children (teens & under) -$20 (includes continental breakfast & lunch). Proceeds support the Community Outreach Program for Girls. FALL PICNIC/FIESTA

Our Saviour, Silver Spring is hosting a Fall Picnic/Fiesta and Fundraiser Sunday afternoon October 4, 2-6.  Food, craft fair, raffle, bake sale, moonbounce and children's activities, at 1700 Powder Mill Road (near New Hampshire Avenue at the Beltway).  



HERB COTTAGE's 75th ANNIVERSARY

September 20-26, the Gift Shop in the Herb Cottage at Washington National Cathedral will offer special activities that include flower arrangement demonstrations, birthday cakes and cookies and visits by authors, artists and representatives for American, African, Asian and European companies whose products are sold in the Gift Shop. VICTORY GARDENS TODAY

Rose Hayden-Smith, a parishioner at All Saints, Pasadena, CA, and a Food and Society Policy Fellow will speak on the relevance of World War II Victory Gardens to the movement toward localized agriculture and sustainability at noon on Friday Sept. 11 in the Conservatory Classroom at the U. ICON WRITING AT KANUGA

URBAN MINISTRY EVENT

The Rev. Stephanie Spellers, author of Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other and the Spirit of Transformation will give a workshop 9 a. m. to 2:45 p. m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Church of the Epiphany, 1317 G Street, NW (above the Metro Center Station.) GENERAL CONVENTION REPORT AND DISCUSSION

All are invited to come and hear from Bishop John Bryson Chane and members of the diocese's deputation to the 76th General Convention of the Episcopal Church at two meetings set for Sept. 9-10. Both events will include presentations from the deputation and the ECW, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion. Both will begin at 7 p.m. and will take place on: 

 

* Sept. 9 at St. Paul's, Waldorf 

* Sept. 10 at Washington National Cathedral

 

UPCOMING DIOCESAN RETREATS

The Diocesan Retreat Committee will conduct two one-day retreats of contemplation and sharing in September. The Rev. Dr. Joan Beilstein, rector of Church of the Ascension, Sligo Parish, will present meditations on the theme of "Seeking Shalom" on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Christ Church, Durham Parish in Nanjemoy, MD.   The word "shalom" is the general Semitic term for "peace, wholeness, and well-being."

 

The Rev. Dr. David R. MacDonald, rector of Christ Church, Durham Parish, will present meditations on the theme of "Chapels of the Spirit" on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Church of the Ascension Sligo Parish in Silver Spring. The Chapels of the Spirit are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel Strength, Knowledge, Holiness and Courage.

DISCUSSION OF THE DISCERNMENT PROCESS 
On Sept.17, members of the Commission on Ministry, EDOW staff and the president of the Standing Committee will be available to talk to clergy about the discernment process for ordination. REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES

Visit the governance Web site at http://governance.edow.org/ for information about the 2009 Regional Assemblies. The deadline for submitting nominations and resolutions is Sept. 18 for Regions 1 through 4, and Oct. 16 for Regions 5 and 6.  Nomination forms and list of offices up for election also are available. Check under "Regions" to find out which region you're in.

 

ALL HALLOWS BIRD WALKS 

All Hallows Guild at Washington National Cathedral will conduct Bird Walks on Thursday, September 17 and Thursday, September 24 at 8:30 a.m. Participants meet at the George Washington Statue on Pilgrim Road, which is on the south side of the Cathedral.  Visitor parking is available in the Cathedral garage accessible off Wisconsin Avenue.  Bring your binoculars and catch the spring migration with experienced birder Sheila Cochran. No reservations are required and all programs are free.  Programs will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain.  Woodlands Information Line: 202.537.2319. Please wear sturdy waterproof shoes.

 

EPISCOPAL CHURCH MUSICIAN TO LEAD WORKSHOP
Ana Hernandez, known throughout the Episcopal Church for her creative exploration of how singing builds community, will lead a workshop, "The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice" with other musicians from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Alban's, D.C. LATINO MINISTRY CELEBRATION -  SAVE THE DATE
The annual Latino Ministry Celebration is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Chane will preside at the Eucharist. Bishop Julio Cesar Holguín, bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Dominican Republic, will be the preacher. A fiesta and dinner will follow. More details to come. SATURDAY SCHOOL AT VTS

The Saturday School at Virginia Theological Seminary begins on September 12 with a presentation by Dr. Amy Gearey Dyer, Professor of Christian Education, on "The Spirituality of Adult Life."   Prof Dyer will speak on "Nurturing Adult Faith Communities" on September 19 and present "Beyond the Adult Forum." All sessions are 9:30 to noon at the seminary. TRANSITION MINISTRY CONFERENCE - SEPT. 20-23
The next Transition Ministry Conference is set for Sept. 20-23 at the Tutu Center, General Theological Seminary, New York City. Clergy interested in being presented for the openings in congregations in the 38 participating dioceses should contact the Rev. Mary Sulerud, canon for deployment and vocational ministry, at msulerud at edow.org regarding the information and forms needed. The deadline for materials from clergy is Sept. 10.

 

ACOLYTE FESTIVAL

The 30th annual Acolyte Festival is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at Washington National Cathedral and acolytes at parishes around the diocese are invited to take part. The event, which draws acolytes from around the nation, will include worship and workshops. Acolytes are invited to bring processional crosses, banners, torches, thuribles, flags and streamers for a festive procession. Liturgical dance groups are also welcome. 54TH ANNUAL POTOMAC COUNTRY HOUSE TOUR

The 54th Annual Potomac Country House Tour, organized by the Women of St. Francis, Potomac to benefit local, regional and worldwide charities, is set for Oct. 3 and 4. Tours begin at St. Francis, where offerings include an a la carte lunch, 20 boutiques and a desert bar. Tickets cost $20 in advance; $25 on the day. SAINT PAUL'S COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

A Saint Paul's College Scholarship Fundraiser and announcement of the Charles N. and Hilda H. M. HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED

The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan. 10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families; Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. There are spaces available for up to seven additional adults or older youth. Costs will be about $1,000 including language study and airfare. Act quickly to make low cost air reservations. NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED
The Pitts Emergency Grant was recently created by the Saint Anna's Home of the Diocese of Washington. The one-time grant of up to $1,500 is designed to offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Episcopal Church House, Mt.
