DIOCESAN HUNGER WALKS
The diocesan Hunger Fund Committee invites you to participate in either
of two concurrent Hunger Walks on Oct. 18 to raise money for the Hunger
Fund. The fund provides grants to organizations throughout the diocese
that provide food to those in need. Both walks begin at 1:30 p.m., and
will take place at:

FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY FOR CLERGY
Congregational Leadership: Family Systems Theory for Clergy is a
three-session program for understanding a congregation's emotional
system as a key to effective leadership. The workshop is set for Oct.

5TH ANNUAL UNITY WALK
The 5th annual interfaith Unity Walk is set for 1 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18.
The walk will begin with opening remarks at the Washington Hebrew
Congregation. Attendees will visit numerous houses of worship along
Embassy Row for hospitality, remarks will be given at the Islamic Center
of Washington and the event will conclude with a singing procession to
the Gandhi Memorial. The walk aims to build bridges of respect among
different faiths as a model for the world to emulate. This year's theme

A BENEDICTINE EXPERIENCE

HEALING PRAYER CONFERENCE
"Minister with Boldness" is the theme of a healing prayer conference set
for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at St. Alban's, D.C. The event is
sponsored by the International Order of St. Luke, an organization that
promotes the healing prayer ministry. All are invited. If you are part
of a healing ministry, this conference will help you mature and

30TH ANNUAL INTERFAITH CONCERT
The InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington will hold its 30th
Annual InterFaith Concert from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the
Washington Hebrew Congregation (3935 Macomb Street NW). This year's
concert features the Kol Rinah Choir of Washington Hebrew Congregation,
Sikh Kirtan Chanters from Delhi, the Mormon Choir of Washington, the
Dayspring Choir of Metropolitan Memorial Church and a special Hindu
guest to lead the audience in a Hindu call and response chant. Following
the performance desserts from around the world will be available.

St. Paul's, Piney has three blue and one red/pink ALMY 1 and 1/2 inch
oil candles in excellent condition that it no longer needs. It is happy
to give them away to a parish that can use them if that church will pay

chasuble, Med., stole, burse and veil from ALMY it would be willing to

CHILDREN-TO-CHILDREN ADVENT APPEAL
The 4th Annual Bishop's Children-to-Children Advent Appeal will support
mothers and children working with Mother Orma and the Purple Industries
sewing ministries in Swaziland. The Bishop began these appeals to
encourage the children of our diocese to support the children of the
Anglican Church of Southern Africa. The mothers in the program have
knitted stuffed teddy bears, which are available for $25 each. They can
be purchased into the New Year, but Christmas orders are due by Dec. 14:
Fax orders to 202/364-6605 for delivery to parishes before Dec. 20. If
you wish to make a donation of $25 but choose not to receive a bear, the
bear will be given to a child in the Diocese of Washington who is
affected by HIV/AIDS. Parishes are encouraged to collect donations in
any amount. The Southern Africa Partnership Committee has prepared a
storybook and activities to help Sunday School directors share the lives
of the children in Swaziland with the children in your parishes. This

THE POWER OF NONVIOLENCE
The Episcopal Peace Fellowship will hold a workshop exploring personal
and social tools for nonviolent conflict resolution, The Power of
Nonviolence, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at St. Alban's, D.C. The
interfaith workshop costs $10. Please bring your own lunch. Facilitators
will present the legacy of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Desmond
Tutu, in light of the personal and international problems facing us
today. There will be film clips from PBS' "A Force More Powerful" about

MICROFINANCE WORKSHOPS
Oikocredit is offering two local workshops on microfinance. The
organization provides credit to microcredit banks, trade cooperatives,
fair trade organizations and small-to-medium enterprises in the
developing world. It also make loans to the world's poorest people so
they have credit for income-generating purposes. The workshops will
teach participants about microcredit, current trends and challenges,
enable them to interact with professionals in the microfinance field,
local investors and socially responsible investment groups. Workshops
are as follows:

2010 COMPENSATION GUIDES AND HEALTH PLAN RATES
The 2010 Compensation Guidelines for active clergy and lay employees
will remain at 2009 levels with special consideration for enhanced
compensation given to those whose compensation falls below these
guidelines. Monthly health premiums in 2010 will be $643 individual,
$1,187 employee plus one, $1,769 family. Additional information is

OLD ALTAR HANGINGS AND VESTMENTS
A group at St. Peter's Church in Westfield, NY, converts old altar
hangings and vestments into new garments, mostly priest and deacon
stoles, designed and sewn by a small but faithful group of ladies of the
church. Proceeds from the sales of new items go to the church's bell
tower restoration fund. If you have items to contribute, please contact

ST. PAUL'S CHOIR OF MEN AND BOYS TO HOST OPEN HOUSE
St. Paul's, K Street will host an Open House on Oct. 18 for boys (and
their families) who may be interested in the Choir of Men and Boys. The

Apply now for the Summer Collegium, a project in support of small
congregations at Virginia Theological Seminary. Clergy (and their

Human Interaction Lab training, set for Feb.12-15 at St. Alban's, D.C.,

associated with what has been called emotional intelligence.

The diocese's Fall Clergy Gathering is set for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct.
13 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase. Keynote speaker
is Jon Meacham, editor of Newsweek, bestselling author and commentator
on politics, history and religious faith in America. Meacham will
discuss his book "American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the
Making of a Nation" and the role of church and state in America today.

The All Youth Cathedral lock-In is set for Nov 13. The theme is

ADVENT SILENT RETREAT
The Diocesan Retreat Committee will hold an Advent Silent Retreat on
Dec. 4- 6 at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville. Retreat
director will be the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean of the Virginia
Theological Seminary. The theme will be "Faith, Forgiveness and Peace:
Bringing Human Complexity to God." The retreat will include prayer,
private reflection and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There will
be opportunities for consultation or confession with Markham. The fee is

DATE CHANGE! PILGRIMAGE TO SOUTH AFRICA
Join the Rev. Mpho Tutu and the Rev. Katherine Stiles for a two-week
retreat to South Africa. The pilgrimage is set for Jan 16-29, 2010;

HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED
The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan.
10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in
intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families;
Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. Costs
will be about $1,000 including language study and airfare. Contact Tom

NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED
The Pitts Emergency Grant, created by the Saint Anna's Home of the
Diocese of Washington, is a one-time award of up to $1,500 designed to
offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African
descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a
critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds
will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must
come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process
is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts
Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of Washington,
Episcopal Church House, Mt. Saint Alban, Washington, D.C. 20016. For
