RACIAL RECONCILIATION WORKSHOP

Register now for a June 17-18 Racial Reconciliation Workshop at St. Alban's, D.C. (Nourse Hall). The workshop will address the fears, ignorance and guilt which inhibit relationships between races. Participants will take part in a number of "do talk" exercises to facilitate discussion about race. This workshop fulfills the national church's requirement for anti-racism training by all church leaders, a requirement that Bishop John B. Chane has also called on diocesan leaders to fulfill. 'VOICES OF WITNESS AFRICA' FILM SCREENING

Ascension, Silver Spring will host a screening of a new half-hour documentary film called "Voices of Witness Africa" in its parish hall at 7 p.m. June 10. The film includes interviews with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Africans about their lives and their relationships with God and the church. A discussion will follow. The church is located at 633 Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring. Parking is available on side streets, around the parking circle, and in the school parking lot behind the church on Silver Spring Avenue. RELIGIOUS WITNESS AT WHITE HOUSE ON JUNE 11

The National Religious Campaign Against Torture will hold a religious witness in front of the White House at noon June 11 and is inviting concerned people of all faiths to participate. National religious leaders will lead the event, urging President Obama to create a Commission of Inquiry to discover the truth about U.S. torture policies and practices since 9/11, in order to ensure that U.S.-sponsored torture never happens again. CHORAL EVENSONG BY THE CHOIR OF ST. PAUL'S, ROCK CREEK

The Choir of St. Paul's, Rock Creek, will present a Choral Evensong at 4 p.m. June 7 at the church, led by B. Michael Parrish, organist and choirmaster. 2009 DIOCESAN JOURNAL AND DIRECTORY 

Changes due no later than June 15. ORGANIST/MUSIC DIRECTOR

Good Shepherd, Silver Spring seeks an Organist/Music Director for adult and children's choir (to be developed from current children's sing-along), work with the director of the Chimes Choir and other parish musicians. Willing to combine this position with Parish Administrator role to become full-time job. The PA position involves bulletin preparation, event/building coordination and overseeing parish volunteers who do routine office work. Contact the Rev. Linda L. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL

The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is seeking volunteers to assist with administrative projects. The school is looking for people who are proficient with MS Word and MS Excel; can enter data into a mailing list database and/or assist in preparing marketing packets and with filing. The school office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and is currently located at Episcopal Church House. In September, it will move to the new school building in SE Washington. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP 

Redeemer, Bethesda will hold a Summer Music Camp from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 13-17. The camp, designed for ages 7-15 (campers must have completed first grade), will be staffed by three professional musical educators. Tuition for the week is $325; scholarships are available. ST. MARY'S, FOGGY BOTTOM ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

On June 14, St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom will celebrate 142 years in the District with a 10 a.m. Anniversary Service. Speaker will be Judge William Newman, Jr. A reception will follow.

 

ORDINATION SERVICE 

At 10 a.m. June 13, Bishop John B. Chane will ordain Sarah Helene Duggin, Greta Getlein, Shell Teyssier Kimble, Timothy Joseph Malone, Elizabeth P. O'Callaghan and Christopher I. Wilkins to the Sacred Order of Deacons at Washington National Cathedral. All are welcome. Clergy: Please vest in red stoles. A reception will follow the service.

 

ALBAN INSTITUTE WEBINARS

In June, the Alban Institute and the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving will offer a series of one-hour live "webinars" that will focus on congregations and the economic crisis. 'THE CALL OF GOD,' A DAY OF QUIET REFLECTION

"The Call of God," A Day of Quiet Reflection in honor of Evelyn Underhill is set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 6 at Sayre House on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. This annual event offers two meditations drawn from Underhill's work, as well as opportunities for private prayer, corporate silence and Eucharist. Leaders are Lynne Shaner and Kathleen Staudt. FESTIVAL EUCHARIST - FRENCH ROMANTICS ON LAFAYETTE SQUARE

St. John's, Lafayette Square will begin its summer service schedule at 10:30 a.m. June 14 with a Festival Eucharist to celebrate the new Lively-Fulcher Organ. The combined St. John's and Parish Choirs, under the direction of Benjamin Hutto, will be accompanied by Michael Lodico, associate organist and choir director. HOSTING 11TH STEP RETREATS 

Samaritan Ministry is launching a new retreat program for Next Step program participants in recovery from substance abuse. Called 11th Step Retreats, the day-long retreat is designed for people who are working the 11th step in a 12-step recovery program of any kind. It is designed to help people find a method of prayer and/or meditation that enables them to draw closer to the God of their understanding. * The Cathedral Transforming Literature of the Bible training workshop is set for June 19-20. There is a fee of $100 for licensing and two commentaries. The annual Latino Ministry Celebration is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Chane will preside at the Eucharist.
