GENERAL CONVENTION REPORT AND DISCUSSION

All are invited to come and hear from Bishop John Bryson Chane and members of the diocese's deputation to the 76th General Convention of the Episcopal Church at two meetings set for Sept. 9-10. Both events will include presentations from the deputation and the ECW, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion. Both will begin at 7 p.m. and will take place on: 

* Sept. 9 at St. Paul's, Waldorf 

* Sept. 10 at Washington National Cathedral

 

NEW GOVERNANCE WEB SITE

Explore the diocese's new governance Web site at http://governance.edow.org/ Most of the new Diocesan Journal, information about the upcoming Regional Assemblies, and many other useful items related to governance are available here.

 

2009 DIOCESAN JOURNAL AND DIRECTORY

The new Diocesan Journal and Directory is being mailed to local clergy, senior wardens, delegates, ex officio members of convention and parish administrators, and should arrive by Sept. 1. Most of it also can be found online at http://governance.edow.org/  

 

HONDURAS TRIP RESCHEDULED

The diocesan mission trip to Honduras has been rescheduled for Jan. 10-20, 2010. The itinerary remains the same: Jan 10-15 in Copan in intensive one-on-one Spanish study, with home stays with local families; Jan. 16-20 in rural villages with Episcopal Church communities. There are spaces available for up to seven additional adults or older youth. Costs will be about $1,000 including language study and airfare. Act quickly to make low cost air reservations. REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES

Visit the governance Web site at http://governance.edow.org/ for information about the 2009 Regional Assemblies. The deadline for submitting nominations and resolutions is Sept. 18 for Regions 1 through 4, and Oct. 16 for Regions 5 and 6.  Nomination forms and list of offices up for election also are available. Check under "Regions" to find out which region you're in.

 

"CULTURES OF CALL" GRANTS INVEST IN FUTURE LEADERSHIP

The Fund for Theological Education will award a total of $350,000 in "Cultures of Call' grants through 2009. The deadline for submission of letters of intent for the next grant cycle is Sept. 1. The grants provide financial support to congregations and church-related organizations for activities and practices that help them become communities of call. APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY TRAINING

"Appreciative Inquiry Training and Transforming Conflict Management into Compassionate Collaboration," facilitated by Rob Voyle, an Episcopal priest, executive coach and church consultant, is set for Sept. 21-25 at Bon Secours Retreat Center, Baltimore. The program will focus on developing mediation skills and on ways to remain centered and resourceful in the midst of conflict. SAINT PAUL'S COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER

A Saint Paul's College Scholarship Fundraiser and announcement of the Charles N. and Hilda H. M. Mason endowment fund  is set for 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 17 at The Carlyle Club, 411 John Carlyle Street, Alexandria, Va. Black tie. Tickets are $100 per person (tax deductible). 54TH ANNUAL POTOMAC COUNTRY HOUSE TOUR

The 54th Annual Potomac Country House Tour, organized by the Women of St. Francis, Potomac to benefit local, regional and worldwide charities, is set for Oct. 3 and 4. Tours begin at St. Francis, where offerings include an a la carte lunch, 20 boutiques and a desert bar. Tickets cost $20 in advance; $25 on the day. CLERGY UPDATES

* The Rev. Jonathan Currier, rector of St. Christopher's, New Carrollton since 1993, has accepted a new call as the rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. He will begin his new ministry on Sept. 27.

* The Rev. W. Bruce McPherson has accepted a call to serve as the interim rector at Grace Episcopal Church and School in Silver Spring. He begins at Grace in late August.

The following deacons who were ordained in June have accepted these new calls: 

* The Rev. Sarah Duggin will serve as the part-time assistant at St. John's, Georgetown. She begins her work in early September. 

* The Rev. Greta Getlein has begun a one year appointment as the part-time assistant at Christ Church, New Haven in the Diocese of Connecticut. 

* The Rev. Shell Kimble has spent the summer as the deacon at St. Barnabas, Upper Marlboro and on Sept. 1 will begin as the part-time assistant at Trinity, Upper Marlboro. 

* The Rev. Timothy Malone will become the new assistant at St. Mary's, Arlington in the Diocese of Virginia in early September. 

* The Rev. Elizabeth O'Callaghan has begun her work as the new assistant at Ascension, Gaithersburg. 

* Christopher Wilkins has begun his work as the part-time assistant at Trinity, St. Mary's City.

* Paul Canady, who will be ordained a deacon on Aug. 22 has accepted a call as the new assistant for Youth and Family Ministry at Christ Church, New Bern, N.C.,  in the Diocese of East Carolina. 

* The Rev. Debra Brewin-Wilson from the Diocese of New Jersey has accepted a call as the new rector of St. Thomas, Croom. She expects to begin her new ministry in mid fall.

DIOCESAN HIGH SCHOOL DANCE SET FOR SEPT. 12

High school students from around the diocese are invited to a dance, set for 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 12 at St. Mark's, Capitol Hill. The event will include a DJ, snacks and dance lessons. EPISCOPAL CHURCH MUSICIAN TO LEAD WORKSHOP

Ana Hernandez, known throughout the Episcopal Church for her creative exploration of how singing builds community, will lead a workshop, "The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice" with other musicians from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Alban's, D.C. VOCATIONAL MINISTRY RETREAT - SEPT. 18-19

The next Vocational Ministry Retreat sponsored by the Commission on Ministry is set for Sept. 18-19 at the St. Mary Seminary Continuing Education Center in Baltimore. The retreat will be led by Marjory Zoet Bankson, writer, teacher and former executive director of Faith at Work. This retreat is designed for all those seeking to discern God's call in their lives, as well as those considering a call to ordained ministry. The cost is $120. Register at www.edow.org/events

 

CANADY TO BE ORDAINED AT ST. COLUMBA'S, D.C.

Bishop John Bryson Chane will ordain Hoyt Paul Candy III to the sacred order of deacons at 10 a.m. Aug. 22, at St. Columba's, D.C. (4201 Albemarle St NW). Clergy are invited to vest and process with red stoles. Clergy planning on processing should arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. and report to the music room for vesting and instructions (church level). A reception will follow. 

 

SQUARE DANCING AT ASCENSION, SILVER SPRING

The Taylor Made Square Dance Club with Betsy Taylor as caller will host square and contra dance classes on Mondays this fall at Ascension, Silver Spring, beginning Sept. 14. Beginner square dance classes are set for 7 to 8 p.m., and contra and square dancing is from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Parish Hall. (633 Sligo Ave or 630 Silver Spring Ave.) Participants of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to join the fun, but children must be able to listen and follow directions. CREATING A CULTURE OF PEACE

Creating a Culture of Peace training is set for Aug. 16-19 at Wellspring in Germantown. CCP offers training on nonviolence principles, analysis of social change and community-building and skills for peacemaking and resources. Every group chooses and plans concrete projects for change. Cost is $395 and includes room, meals and training. Some scholarship funds are available. TRANSITION MINISTRY CONFERENCE - SEPT. 20-23

The next Transition Ministry Conference is set for Sept. 20-23 at the Tutu Center, General Theological Seminary, New York City. Clergy interested in being presented for the openings in congregations in the 38 participating dioceses should contact the Rev. Mary Sulerud, canon for deployment and vocational ministry, at msulerud at edow.org regarding the information and forms needed. The deadline for materials from clergy is Sept. 10.

 

DISCUSSION OF THE DISCERNMENT PROCESS 

On Sept.17, members of the Commission on Ministry, EDOW staff and the president of the Standing Committee will be available to talk to clergy about the discernment process for ordination. ST. AUGUSTINE'S GAME NIGHT

'THE SPIRIT OF THE PEARL'

David W. Smith, Sr., executive director of The Pearl Coalition, will talk about the escape of 77 slaves from Washington and Alexandria, Va., from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 30 at St. Augustine's, D.C. The escapees boarded the Pearl schooner, docked at the Southwest waterfront,  just yards from St. Augustine's present location, on April 15, 1848 - the largest such escape attempt in the U.S. The Pearl Coalition's mission is to educate others about slaves, slavery and escapes from slavery, along with the role of abolitionists and the Underground Railway. The Aug. 30 event begins with light refreshments and ends with a facilitated audience Q&A.

 

ART & SPIRIT COFFEEHOUSE AT ST. AUGUSTINE'S, D.C.

Pianist Steve Baddour will perform "Latin Passions," musical selections from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at St. Augustine's, D.C., followed by a question and answer session facilitated by artist Michael Mack. ICON PAINTING WORKSHOP (*please note corrected dates: this is a 3-day event)

The Rev. Peter Pearson will lead a three-day icon writing (painting) retreat/workshop on Labor Day weekend at Trinity, St. Mary's. Classes are set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 5 and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 6 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7. Participants will receive step-by-step instructions to start and complete an icon. Epiphany, D.C., is having a used book and bake sale on Aug. 16-18 in its Parish Hall. Hours are 12:15 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16 (Sunday) and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 17-18. ACOLYTE FESTIVAL

The 30th annual Acolyte Festival is set for  10 a.m. Oct. 10 at Washington National Cathedral and acolytes at parishes around the diocese are invited to take part. The event, which draws acolytes from around the nation, will include worship and workshops. Acolytes are invited to bring processional crosses, banners, torches, thuribles, flags and streamers for a festive procession. Liturgical dance groups are also welcome. Gallagher is the founder of the Church Development Institute, which conducts intensive training programs on congregational leadership and development.

NEW GRANT AVAILABLE TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN IN NEED

The Pitts Emergency Grant was recently created by the Saint Anna's Home of the Diocese of Washington. The one-time grant of up to $1,500 is designed to offer emergency assistance to women of at least 70 years old of African descent who are members of the Diocese of Washington when there is a critical, unexpected event which requires an immediate response. Funds will be paid directly to an entity, not an individual. The request must come from or be endorsed by a clergy member in the diocese. The process is confidential, and requests can be submitted at any time to: Pitts Emergency Grant of Saint Anna's Home, Episcopal Diocese of  Washington, Episcopal Church House, Mt. LATINO MINISTRY CELEBRATION -  SAVE THE DATE

The annual Latino Ministry Celebration is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Chane will preside at the Eucharist.
