FLOWER MART
Visitors to Episcopal Church House please note: Flower Mart set up has
begun, and surface parking on the cathedral close is restricted today,
Friday and Saturday. This year's Flower Mart celebrates the Cathedral
Centennial and the Republic of South Africa.
The festival features plants, foods, boutiques, music, puppet shows and
carousel rides. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday. 

EPISCOPAL SENIOR MINISTRIES SUNDAY
May 4 has been designated as Episcopal Senior Ministries Sunday.
Parishes are asked to pray for all seniors and their ministries in the
church, including Cedar Lane Apartments, Christian Communities Group
Homes, Collington Life Care Community, Episcopal Senior Ministries, ESM
Cares Geriatric Care Management Service, The Fellowship of St. John,
Friendship Terrace Retirement Community, St. Anna's Fund, St. Mary's
Court, and St. Philip's House and Senior Van. For more information,

MAGICAL MOMENTS GALA - ESM
Episcopal Senior Ministries will hold its Magical Moments Gala and
presentation of the Leadership in Aging Awards from 6:30 to 9 p.m. June
5 at the Fannie Mae Building in Washington, D.C. Elizabeth Fox, director
of IONA Senior Services, and AARP, which is celebrating its 50th
anniversary, will be recognized for their outstanding dedication and
commitment to the field of aging. Tickets are $125 each, $175 each for
Friend's tickets, and are available at www.ESM.org or 202/414-6315.
Proceeds from the event support ESM's programs and services.

LIVING IN THE CITY - THC
Transitional Housing Corporation's third annual awards event, Living in
the City, is set for May 29. THC will honor those who have made a
commitment to advocating for more affordable housing in the DC region -
Bishop John Bryson Chane and Enterprise Community Partners director
David Bowers. Master of Ceremonies will be Kojo Nnamdi from WAMU-FM

A WORKSHOP OF RADICAL WELCOME
The Rev. Stephanie Spellers, author of "Radical Welcome: Embracing God,
the Other, and the Spirit of Transformation," will offer a workshop on
developing an all-inclusive ministry for church growth from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. May 17 at Our Saviour, Silver Spring (1700 Powder Mill Road). A
contribution of $20 is payable at the door. This workshop is a
Crummell-Cooper Leadership Initiative presentation sponsored by the
diocese, the Union of Black Episcopalians and the Afro-Anglican Clergy

THE CROSSING - EMERGING CHURCH SERVICE
All are invited to participate in a worship service called "The
Crossing" at 6:30 p.m. May 16 at St. Luke's, D.C. (1514 - 15th Street,
NW). This service, which features live contemporary music, is a regular
offering at St. Paul's Cathedral, Boston, and will be led by its
Minister for Radical Welcome, the Rev. Stephanie Spellers. For more

WASHINGTON WALKS FEATURES ST. JOHN'S, LAFAYETTE SQUARE
Washington Walks, a D.C.-based walking tour company, will offer a
half-day event, "Restoring St. John's Church Lafayette Square," from
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 31. The event will include a guided tour of
the historic "Church of the Presidents" and adjoining parish house, an
overview of St. John's architectural evolution by historian Richard
Grimmet, author of a forthcoming history of the church, presentations by
the project manager currently overseeing a major restoration project and
a panel discussion by members of the St. John's vestry and design
committee. Cost is $25 per person (proceeds go to the restoration fund).

Reconciliation Training program on May 16-17 at St. Barnabas, Temple

LILLY ENDOWMENT - DEADLINE MAY 14
Applications for grants from the National Clergy Renewal Program,
sponsored by the Lilly Endowment, are due May 14. The grants support
extended sabbaticals for pastors and a complementary set of activities
for "congregational renewal" in their parishes. Additional information

that have an ordained pastor with a master of divinity degree from an
accredited theological school are eligible to apply. 

AN EVENING WITH THE REV. CARLOS EXPOSITO (FROM CUBA)
All are invited to attend a special discussion and potluck supper with

PRE-K TEACHERS FOR BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL
The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys is seeking two dynamic pre-K
teachers with experience developing and implementing developmentally
appropriate curricula and extracurricular programming. Must possess: A
degree in early childhood, elementary or special education; a strong
knowledge of early childhood curricula and instruction methods;
experience and expertise in working with students from low-income
households; the ability to work in a team teaching environment; a
collaborative spirit and resourceful, organized, flexible and

20S 30S RETREAT
The Cathedral College and the diocesan Young Adult Ministries Network
are sponsoring the third in a series of retreats for people in their 20s
and 30s. "Awakening to the Spirit" is set for May 9-10 at the Cathedral
College. Retreat participants will learn several Christian prayer
practices for everyday spirituality. Sign up at

EUCHARIST TO COMMEMORATE THURGOOD MARSHALL
A special evening Eucharist to commemorate Thurgood Marshall is set for
5:30 p.m. May 18 at St. Alban's, D.C. In 2006 the diocese passed a
resolution asking the General Convention of the Episcopal Church to
recognize Marshall in the in the book of Lesser Feasts and Fasts. This
also calls for parishes throughout the diocese to remember Marshall on a
date near May 17 - the anniversary of the famous Supreme Court case he
argued for school desegregation.

AN APPEAL FROM THE HAITI MICAH PROJECT 
St. Timothy's, D.C. is joining the Haiti Micah Project to help the
children of Haiti. The church is currently collecting clothes, shoes,
school supplies, vitamins and toiletries. The goal is to ship about 15
boxes to Haiti by May 15. Local churches are encouraged to join in by
collecting items or by making tax-deductible financial contributions to
assist with shipping. On Sundays through May 11, contributions may be
dropped off at St. Timothy's Parish Hall (3601 Alabama Avenue, SE,
Washington, DC, 20020) between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Checks payable
to The Haiti Micah Project can be sent to the church. To drop off items
on other days, please call the church at 202/582-7740 or Ruthie Quartey

LIGHTING TO UNITE
See Washington National Cathedral as you've never seen it before for
three nights - May 9 to 11 - when Swiss lighting artist Gerry Hofstetter
will create a spectacular exterior illumination of the south and west
sides, in celebration of the Cathedral's centennial.  Images will be
projected directly onto the Cathedral from sunset to midnight. A live
musical performance is set for 6:30 p.m. May 10, and there will be a
special worship service, Sent Forth by the Spirit, at 11 a.m. May

CLERGY CRAFT GROUP FORMING 
Men and women clergy who enjoy using their hands and fabric, yarn or
thread to create something beautiful are invited to contact Carol Flett,
rector of St.Bartholomew's, Laytonsville and Interfaith Programs
Coordinator at the Cathedral College. She is gathering the names and
locations where interested clergy live and serve in order to suggest a
convenient site for a monthly late afternoon or evening group to meet.
The group would listen and chat, share creative skills and perhaps teach
others a new skill. The group would begin meeting in the summer months.

CONGREGATIONS AND GIFTS IN MINISTRY WITH YOUNG ADULTS
Carol Howard Merritt, author of "Tribal Church: Ministering to the
Missing Generation" will explore ways to welcome youth and young adults
into the church. Program is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at Western
Presbyterian Church, 2401 Virginia Ave NW, Washington D.C. Registration:
$75 for two people, $85 for three; includes a copy of the book for each
team, continental breakfast and lunch. Congregation teams of two or more

PARKING AT CHURCH HOUSE
Church House has concluded its practice of paying for parking for
guests, and will no longer validate parking for visitors. Parking will
still be provided, however, for major diocesan events at the Cathedral,
such as the Diocesan Convention, ordinations and confirmations. Other
parking options include street parking (2 hour limit). After 3:30 p.m.,
surface parking is permitted on the Cathedral Close.
 
ART OF SPIRITUAL COMPANIONSHIP COURSE
Applications are now being accepted for the 2008/2009 Art of Spiritual
Companionship course, which is designed to introduce the theory,
spirituality and practice of the ancient Christian tradition of
spiritual direction. Graduates may serve as spiritual resources to their
faith communities to help others discern the work of the Spirit in their

SEEKING PRINTER AND TONER CARTRIDGES!
The youth of St. John's, Mt. Ranier, are developing a fundraising
project and need your help. They are collecting old printer and toner
cartridges to raise money for the church's Youth Ministry. Please help
by collecting and donating your used printer and toner cartridges.

these items off or to schedule someone to pick them up.
