AED (AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS) PROGRAM 
The Diocese of Washington is encouraging its churches and schools to
learn more about Automated External Defibrillators and how to set up a
program. AEDs are designed to revive a heart that has gone into a
chaotic rhythm and save hundreds of lives every year. If your church or
school is interested in setting up a program, contact Robert Tomlinson
at rtomlinson at edow.org or 202/537-6523. He is attempting to gauge
interest so the diocese can negotiate a better pricing structure.
Currently, AEDs cost $1,500-$2,500, with additional costs for training
and maintenance. Those interested in learning more about AEDs also can

2008 HEALTH PLAN RATES AVAILABLE
The Diocese of Washington is pleased to announce a 6 percent premium
increase with no plan changes for the 2008 calendar year. It continues
to offer the BlueChoice Opt-Out Plus plan which includes dental,
prescription drug and discount vision care. If you have questions,

2008 COLA 
The diocese's 2008 COLA will be announced in November, after it has been
approved by the Diocesan Council. It is anticipated that it will be a
3.0 to 3.5 percent increase to base salary, based on third quarter CPI
and other regional cost of living data. 

CONVERSATION WITH CATHEDRAL COLLEGE FELLOWS 
Join the Rev. Debbie Blanchard, pastor of First Baptist Church in
Littleton, Mass., and the Rev. Martha Highsmith, senior pastor of the
University Church at Yale, at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Cathedral College
Common Room for presentations and conversation. Blanchard will speak
about "Elmo, Peanut Butter, and the Practices: Spiritual Modeling
through Preaching"; Highsmith will present "Sound Bites: Feeding on the
Word with a Digital Generation." A Halloween reception will follow.

PILGRIMAGE TO ENGLAND
St. Dunstan's, Bethesda is planning a pilgrimage to England from April
17-28, led by the Rev. Jeffrey MacKnight in conjunction with Worldwide

FOLK MUSICIAN JOHN MCCUTCHEON IN CONCERT
Acclaimed singer-songwriter John McCutcheon will perform at 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 16 at St. Alban's, D.C. A master of the banjo, guitar, fiddle,
autoharp and hammer dulcimer, McCutcheon has more than 25 recordings and
has had seven Grammy nominations. Concert will benefit the church's
Crossroads Shelter. Tickets $25; purchase tickets for will-call at

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH SEEKS NOMINEES FOR CHURCH OFFICES
The Joint Standing Nominating Committee of the General Convention of the
Episcopal Church is seeking applications from persons willing to be
nominated to serve the national church on the Court for the Trial of a
Bishop, as board members of The Church Pension Fund, members of
Executive Council and the General Board of Examining Chaplains and as
trustees of General Theological Seminary. Elections will take place at
the 2009 General Convention. Applications must be received on or before

MINISTER OF MUSIC (P/T)
Saint David's, D.C., seeks part-time Minister of Music to begin Jan. 1.
Oversight of all music activities, leadership of one adult (traditional)
and one family (contemporary) choir, supervision of musical support for
Sunday School, music planning for all services, two Sunday rehearsals,
library maintenance and pastoral leadership. Candidates should have
history of successful ministry in Episcopal/Anglican setting, possess a
higher degree in liturgical studies, sacred music and/or performance,

Three diocesan groups are in need of new members: the new Task Force on
Alcohol and Substance Abuse; the Diocesan Retreat Committee; and the

FALL CLERGY DAY
The Fall Clergy Day is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 8 at All Saint's,
Chevy Chase. The Rt. Rev. Claude Payne, retired Bishop of Texas, author
of "Reclaiming The Great Commission: A Practical Model For Transforming
Denominations And Congregations," will be the speaker. There is a $10

RACIAL RECONCILIATION TRAINING REGISTRATION OPENS 
The diocese's Committee on Racial Reconciliation will conduct an
expanded and re-formatted Racial Reconciliation Training program on Nov.
2-3. Registration for this workshop, which will be at St. Paul's, Rock
Creek, is now open at   www.edow.org/events The workshop is limited to
60 participants. Other training sessions are set for Feb. 8-9 and May
16-17, 2008. Locations will be announced at a later date.  

2007 CHILDREN'S ADVENT PROJECT 
Information will be coming soon about Bishop John Bryson Chane's
selection of the work of Beauty Bala and the Siyaphila creche and
pre-school in South Africa for support by the children of the Diocese of
Washington during Advent. This follows last year's "Children 2 Children"
appeal.

FALL SAFEGUARDING GOD'S CHILDREN TRAININGS:
Fall dates for Safeguarding God's Children training sessions are as
follows:
* Oct. 27: 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m., St. Luke's, D.C. (Saturday)
* Nov. 10: 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. at St. Mark's, Silver Spring (Saturday)
* Nov. 27: 6:30 to 10 p.m. at St. Columba's (Dinner included)
* Dec. 8: 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul's, Rock Creek (Saturday)

APPLY NOW FOR THE 2008 SUMMER COLLEGIUM
The Summer Collegium, a project that supports small congregations, is
accepting applications for next year's event, set for June 25-July 3,
2008. This all-expenses-paid conference is open to clergy who pastor
small congregations and their spouses or partners. Non-ordained pastors

12-STEP EUCHARIST
St. Alban's, D.C., and its Hope for Recovery ministry team offers a
12-Step Eucharist at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month.
It's not necessary to be in a 12-step program to attend. Please contact
