UPDATE: VERNA DOZIER FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
The funeral of Verna Dozier is set for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 30 at St.
Mark's, Capitol Hill (118 Third Street SE). Bishop Jane Holmes Dixon,
retired suffragan of Washington, will preside. Bishop Michael Curry of
North Carolina will be among the eulogists. 
* Parking will be very limited, and the church is asking people not
directly involved with the service to walk, Metro or carpool (St. Mark's
is at Capitol South Metro or is about a 10 minute walk from Union
Station). The church has made arrangements to use the parking lot at the
Capitol Hill Baptist Church (5th and A Streets NE) six blocks away or
the Supreme Court parking lot (3rd & A Streets NE) four blocks away. *
Clergy, vest in white stoles. (There will be a vesting room in the
Undercroft.) * Child care will be available. 
* The interment of ashes will take place at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at St.
Mark's columbarium. 

"AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"
Around 160 congregations in the Washington area will be showing "An
Inconvenient Truth" during the week of Oct. 1-8 as part of Greater
Washington Interfaith Power and Light's Spotlight on Global Warming.
Local showings include a 4:30 p.m. Sept 30 viewing at Washington
National Cathedral and a 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1 showing at St. Columba's
(4201 Albemarle St. NW Washington, D.C.) As part of this initiative,
Dean Samuel T. Lloyd will preach on the biblical charge to care for the
earth during the 11 a.m. Oct. 1 service at the cathedral. For more

MEETING TO DISCUSS THE 9/11 UNITY WALK
Come celebrate and discuss the 2006 Unity Walk at Busboys and Poets
(1390 V St NW, Washington, D.C.) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2. The walk
successfully brought together more than 1,500 people, leading religious
leaders, celebrities and activists to spread a message of compassion and
hope, in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of 9/11. For more

ECW-UTO EVENSONG SET FOR OCT. 22
Bishop John Bryson Chane will recognize and celebrate the dedication and
leadership of the Episcopal Church Women and United Thank Offering in
the Diocese of Washington at an Evensong at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 in the

ATTENTION CLERGY:
Clergy canonically resident in the dioceses of Washington, Maryland and
Easton are eligible to become members of The Corporation for Relief of
the Widows and Children of the Clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church
in Maryland. Two principal benefits of membership, which is deemed paid
up after 15 years, include an annual annuity of $1,000 to beneficiaries
of the member and a $8,000 death benefit. The gratuities are based on
need and at present are in the $2,000 - $20,000 range. The cost is $50

If your parish is interested in accessing the demographic information
for its surrounding area, go to www.Link2Lead.com Click on "Register."
Under denomination select Episcopal, then select Episcopal Diocese of
Washington, your city and your parish from the drop down boxes. Then
enter your personal data and click on "Register." You will be assigned
an account number and password to access the data, and will want to make
a note of those. Once you have registered, you can sign in at any time
with your account number and password. Each congregation is allotted 20
registrations.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS AT THE CATHEDRAL
Beginning at 4:45 p.m. Oct. 4, dogs from overburdened shelters from
neighboring states and New Orleans obtained through the Washington
Animal Rescue League's Shelter Animal Relief Effort will be on the
cathedral grounds for a blessing of the animals. Washington Humane
Society representatives and animals, along with their new mobile
adoption pet center also will be there. Members of the public are
invited to bring their companion animals for the blessing, and are asked
to support a pet toy drive by WARL by bringing new hard, plastic toys or
balls for dogs and crinkle balls or pom-poms for cats. The blessing
begins at 6:15 p.m. at the west front steps.

ACTIVE NONVIOLENCE WORKSHOP
This participatory workshop set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at
Redeemer, Bethesda, is an introduction to the spirituality and practice
of active nonviolence using methods of interactive education:
Meditation, role playing, journaling, movie clips and small group
discussion. Participants learn to recognize and confront violence in
their own lives, their families and their communities and they learn to
overcome this violence nonviolently. The program was developed by Pace e
Bene and the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Cost is $25, including lunch.

ST. GEORGE'S COLLEGE, JERUSALEM
St. George's College is a continuing education center of the Anglican
Communion that enables Christians to encounter the people of the Holy
Land and to study the Bible and history in the context of pilgrimage and

21ST CENTURY EVANGELISM: "CONVERSATION - NOT CONVERSION"
St. Mark's, Capitol Hill is hosting a series of guest preachers from
other faiths and traditions through Jan. 21 to address the issue of how
we can engage and remain in conversation with people whose views differ
significantly from our own. October's offerings include an Oct. 15 talk
by Tara Brach, author, lay Buddhist priest and founder of the Insight
Meditation Community of Washington, D.C. For more information, contact

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Upward Bound: Transformational Leadership Training is set for Feb. 5-8
in Honolulu, Hawaii. The training addresses the personal work leaders

FLU SHOTS AT ST. MARY'S, FOGGY BOTTOM
The ECW of St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom (728 23rd Street, NW) will be
offering free flu shots to senior citizens with a Medicare card as part
of the church's Annual Bazaar, which includes a bake sale, lunch/dinners
and health care services. The bazaar is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov.

2006 EPISCOPAL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION CONFERENCE
The Church Pension Group is hosting the 2006 Episcopal Business
Administration Conference for Parishes and Institutions for parishes in
our region. The conference will be held in Atlanta, Ga., and will
provide participants the opportunity to develop professional skills,
share resources and network with other parishes and institutions. Topics
will include current policies, services and new initiatives under

ADVENT QUIET DAY

ANGUS DUN GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE
The Angus Dun Grant Application deadline is Oct. 13. The Angus Dun
Fellowship Fund supports the continuing education of the clergy of the
Diocese of Washington. Grants of up to $1,000 are made according to
criteria detailed on the Web site,

SACRED GROUNDS
This group for young Episcopalians in the diocese (20s/30s) will meet at

CHRISTIAN FORMATION RESOURCES
Extensive new resources compiled by the diocese's Christian Formation

information on teaching Sunday School, leading a youth group, organizing

MINISTRY DEPLOYMENT CONFERENCE
The Rev. Mary Sulerud, canon for deployment and vocational ministry,
will represent the diocese at the Fall Ministry Deployment Conference in
Roanoke, Va. (Oct. 14-17). If you are a canonically resident or licensed
clergy person and would like your credentials presented at the
conference for deployment consideration, please submit an updated resume
and CDO profile to Sulerud or George McConnell by Oct. 6. The materials
should be submitted as an e-mail attachment and sent to

DOCC PROGRAM - CHANGE OF DATES
Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC), a Christian formation program,
will take place at Washington National Cathedral this fall. The program
is set for 7 to 9 p.m. (with an optional supper at 6 p.m.) on Tuesday
nights from OCT. 10 through JAN. 23, skipping Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, with a
required retreat day on OCT. 21. Dean Samuel T. Lloyd and the Rev.
William Barnwell, the cathedral's canon missioner, will give the
presentations, and participants will respond in small groups. If you are
