Ellen D. Washington, a prominent lay woman in the Diocese of Washington,
died yesterday as a result of wounds suffered in a car accident.
Washington was a member of St. Philip's, Laurel and was a prime mover in
the Absalom Jones window and scholarship program at that church. She was
an active member of the Union of Black Episcopalians; was co-convener of
the Southern Africa Task Force which explored the possibility of
establishing a partnership with the Province of Southern Africa and was
serving as co-chair of the Partnership Committee at the time of her
death. She served in numerous leadership positions in this diocese,
among them deputy to Provincial Synod and lay assessor. No arrangements
have yet been made, but condolences may be sent to her family at
