SALMON APPOINTED TO PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL OVERSIGHT
Bishop John Bryson Chane has appointed the Rt. Rev. Edward L. Salmon,
retiring bishop of South Carolina, to provide supplemental episcopal
oversight to All Saints, Chevy Chase. "Under this arrangement, Bishop
Salmon has agreed to visit the parish from time to time, to confirm on
my behalf and to supervise the process of discernment of individuals who
wish to explore their potential call to ordination," Bishop Chane wrote
in a letter to All Saints parishioners dated Oct. 23. Bishop Chane will
continue to make canonical visitations to the parish. For more

PASSES AVAILABLE FOR PRESIDING BISHOP "SEATING" SERVICE
The Right Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori will be seated in the Presiding
Bishop's official chair during the 11 a.m. Nov. 5 All Saints' Sunday
liturgy at Washington National Cathedral, and will be the celebrant and
preacher at that service. Members of the diocese are encouraged to
attend. Passes will be available at the Cathedral's west front
(Wisconsin Avenue side) on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at
10 a.m. Nov. 5. Sign language interpretation will be provided in the
South Transept. Ushers will provide special amplification devises for
the hearing impaired. Wheelchair access is available at the main
entrance. Parking is limited on the Cathedral Close, so you are
encouraged to use public transportation.
BULLETIN INSERTS ON PRESIDING BISHOP INVESTITURE
The first of two Sunday bulletin inserts about the prayer and
celebrations surrounding the investiture and seating of Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori as the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church has
been posted on the Episcopal News Service Web site:

This first insert is for use by congregations on Sunday, Oct. 29. The
inserts are available in English and Spanish. Print formats may be
downloaded for easy duplication and insertion into a congregational
service leaflet. Jefferts Schori's greeting to the Episcopal Church will
form the second insert, for use on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 5.
PRESIDING BISHOP INVESTITURE TO BE WEBCAST
The investiture of the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori as presiding
bishop will be webcast live at the Church's homepage:
http://www.episcopalchurch.org. The webcast will begin shortly before
the 11 a.m. service of investiture on Nov. 4 at Washington National
Cathedral, and will be available in Windows Media Player and Real Player
formats in both high bandwidth and low bandwidth options as well as an
audio-only version. The Rev. Jan Nunley, the church's deputy for
communication and former NPR broadcaster, and the Rev. David Crabtree, a
deacon and television news anchor at WRAL in Raleigh/Durham, N.C., will
provide commentary.
CATHEDRAL CONFIRMATION
The next confirmation service at the National Cathedral is set for 10
a.m. Nov. 18. Those parishes participating must notify Paul Cooney,
Canon to the Ordinary, at either pcooney at edow.org or 202/537-6527 by
Nov. 1.
WELCOME RECEPTION FOR NEW CLERGY
The Washington Episcopal Clergy Association (WECA) invites all new
clergy to the diocese and all WECA members to a welcome reception from

20S & 30S ADVENT DAY
The diocesan Young Adult Ministry Network is sponsoring an Advent Day
titled, "Who Is Christ for Us Today? An Exploration in Prayer and
Reflection," led by the Rev. Martin L. Smith. Smith is
theologian-in-residence at St. Columba's, D.C., and is a noted writer
and teacher on Christian spirituality. The Advent Day is scheduled for 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Cathedral College, and is designed for
people in their 20s and 30s. Cost is $25. Lunch is included. Online

The 2007 UTO Grant Applications are now available in the Office of

CALLING ALL YOUNG ARTISTS
The diocese is inviting all children and young people to draw pictures
that illustrate its newly adopted vision and mission statements. The
pictures will be displayed in Washington National Cathedral during the
2007 Diocesan Convention on Jan. 26-27.
Drawings should be sent to Gerry Perez and Atron Rowe at Episcopal
Church House, Mount St. Alban, Washington, D.C. 20016 by Dec. 18.

ADVENT QUIET MORNING
Brother Bernard Delcourt, (Order of the Holy Cross) of Holy Cross
Monastery, West Park, NY, will lead an Advent Quiet Morning with a
series of meditations on Dec. 2 at Christ, Chaptico. The day will begin
with Morning Prayer at 8:30 a.m. and conclude with a noon Holy
Eucharist. Between the meditations there will be opportunity for private

INSITUTE FOR PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY
The Institute for Progressive Christianity, a nascent organization for

EPISCOPAL-AFFILIATED SENIOR HOUSING - FALL OPEN HOUSE DAY
A simultaneous open house at the Episcopal-affiliated senior housing
communities in the diocese is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 12. Each
community will offer activities and tours so seniors and their families
can check out the services and programs available. Participating
communities are Collington, Cedar Lane, St. Philip's House, Friendship
Terrace, Christian Communities Group Homes and St. Mary's Court. For

'THE EPISCOPAL MAJORITY' TO HOLD FIRST MEETING
Bishop J. Jon Bruno of the Diocese of Los Angeles will be the featured
speaker at the first meeting of The Episcopal Majority, "Remaining
Faithful," At 1 p.m. Nov. 3 at St. Columba's (4201 Albemarle Street,
NW). Bishop Bruno, a recognized leader in the Episcopal Church in such
areas as interfaith ministry, education, nonviolence and the
Kaleidoscope Project, which facilitates ministry in multicultural

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR GROUP LIFE AND DISABILITY INSURANCE
All parishes that are not currently offering life and disability
insurance to their eligible employees will be receiving material for an
Open Enrollment period from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30. This will provide an
opportunity for parishes to enroll eligible staff into the employer-paid
group life insurance plan without the employee needing to complete a
Health Statement. The disability plans can be either employee or

ATTENTION CLERGY:
Clergy canonically resident in the dioceses of Washington, Maryland and
Easton are eligible to become members of The Corporation for Relief of
the Widows and Children of the Clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church
in Maryland. Two principal benefits of membership, which is deemed paid
up after 15 years, include an annual annuity of $1,000 to beneficiaries
of the member and a $8,000 death benefit. The gratuities are based on
need and at present are in the $2,000 - $20,000 range. The cost is $50

ACTIVE NONVIOLENCE WORKSHOP
This participatory workshop set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at
Redeemer, Bethesda, is an introduction to the spirituality and practice
of active nonviolence using methods of interactive education:
Meditation, role playing, journaling, movie clips and small group
discussion. Participants learn to recognize and confront violence in
their own lives, their families and their communities and they learn to
overcome this violence nonviolently. The program was developed by Pace e
Bene and the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Cost is $25, including lunch.

ST. GEORGE'S COLLEGE, JERUSALEM
St. George's College is a continuing education center of the Anglican
Communion that enables Christians to encounter the people of the Holy

The ECW of St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom (728 23rd Street, NW) will be
offering free flu shots to senior citizens with a Medicare card as part
of the church's Annual Bazaar, which includes a bake sale, lunch/dinners
and health care services. The bazaar is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov.
